Ireland’s Luke Carson was ruled out of the World Championships last week following an extremely serious to his tibia. He updates his blog on Machine Fitness from his hospital bed:
After being brought from Lowestoft to home for no more than 24 hours when I took a nasty spasm in my leg and seemed to have furthered the damage in my leg loosing feeling in both my legs, could not move my toes or hip..was vomiting with pain and developed a fever…..
I was rushed to hospital once again where they were very concerned I had developed Compartment Syndrome with the swelling and pressure.
I was administered a record amount of morphine (over 30mg) probably enough to knock out a small horse and my cast was cut off, ice was placed all over my leg. They then stuck a fairly huge needle into my leg, in an effort to release and monitor the pressure.
I was then brought to the short stay unit where I have been unable to move and have had continuous ice on my legs to help bring down the swelling and help with pain control.I won’t be allowed to leave hospital until I can move myself. I then will be transferred to Princess Grace Hospital in London where I will under go some reconstruction surgery and have yet another plate drilled into my leg in an effort to aid healing and get me back on my feet.
All though at this point thinking about the gym is hard and even thinking anything positive is proving difficult, I do plan to return to the gym and at a very minimum compete solely on pommels as it has no stress on the leg.
Hopefully I can get fit and ready for the Commonwealth Games.
We can’t imagine how Luke is feeling. We continue to wish him every best wish there is.
